Mathematician and expert in artificial intelligence and robotics Carme Torras has recently received the Creu de Sant Jordi 2024 Award for her outstanding professional career. Torras is one of the most brilliant Catalan scientists in the field of robotics and artificial intelligence and at the same time a prominent science fiction writer. The Creu de Sant Jordi is one of the highest awards granted by the Generalitat de Catalunya, which emerged in 1981 with the aim of distinguishing people who have stood out for their professional career.

Last October, Torras participated in the 'Social Internet Conference: 25 years of digital inclusion in the Omnia Network', the joint conference of the Punt TIC Network and the Omnia Network, with the talk 'The ethics of artificial intelligence and social robotics'. Torras reflected on the importance of studying the positive and negative implications of artificial intelligence and robotics for both people and society and shared several examples of how these two technologies can improve public services. Torras highlighted the importance of regulation and of guaranteeing guidelines and regulations that support data privacy, transparency, diversity, non-discrimination and well-being.
